Opportunity: Area Director of Engineering (Maintenance)
Manage all general and preventative maintenance functions at the Whiteface Lodge and the Laurel Lake Placid to ensure guest service and sustainability standards are achieved and maintained throughout the hotels.
Work with your team members to create a productive and healthy work environment. This individual must be willing to roll up their sleeves and be hands-on when needed but balance the strategic perspective and future planning of the department. Have in-depth experience in leadership and team dynamics to pursue objectives identified in established strategic plans.
Work through the mechanical engineering report with priority items to replace and repair. Become intimately involved with the FF&E 5-year Capital plan.
Must have expertise in Project Management and a well-rounded knowledge to assess, repair and/or replace all mechanicals (or research to do such). This is a 30% hands-on role and 70% strategic planner.

Your Focus
- Interview, select, train, schedule, coach, and support associates, ensuring they perform in accordance with established brand or hotel standards and consistent with HHM core values.
- Conduct room inspections and identify repair needs.
- Manage relationships, coordinate bids, quotes and contracts for 3rd party vendors.
- Meet with the staff 2 times per day and assign priority projects and tasks; ensure all are attended to with adequate and timely follow-up to the GM
- Oversee all projects (Large or small), or PIPs, and manage and report on the work progress daily.
- Install or repair sheet rock and other wall coverings.
- Work with the team to develop their skill sets and participate with the jobs to ensure proper completion is #1.
- Continue the replacement and repair of heating and cooling pumps as well as preventative maintenance on the suites where and when needed.
- Manage expenses (labor and product) to the budgeted amount; do not exceed without prior approval.
- Attend to the department’s monthly checkbook and ensure we are following the budget set forth.
- Perform preventative maintenance on a scheduled basis and complete work orders as necessary; keep accurate records of PM’s on all rooms and equipment.
- Maintain the building exterior and “curb appeal” of entire hotel grounds
- Refurbish, paint and finish furniture and fixtures as needed.
- Test, examine, and maintain hotel’s life safety systems to ensure they are always 100% operational.
- Maintain repair and preventive maintenance records and coordinate compliance of service contracts, state certifications, code enforcement, local health department, insurance demands and other jurisdictional requirements (perform and maintain work to local, state and Federal codes).
- Be aware of guest satisfaction scores and work toward increasing departmental and overall guest satisfaction.
- Your #1 internal customer is the Front Desk, where most complaints or concerns are conveyed. Communication to and from the Front Desk and Maintenance is paramount for our success.
- Follow sustainability guidelines and practices related to HHM’s Earth View program.
- Practice safe work habits, wear protective safety equipment and follow MSDS and OSHA standards.
- Perform other duties as requested by management.
Your Background and Skills
- High School diploma and/or trade school course work in related field preferred with extensive 7-10 years’ experience in Resorts, Hotels and/or related industries.
- Previous engineer/maintenance leadership experience required or equivalent training.
- Specialized certifications are preferred (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, etc.).
